Fed: Govt announces new work for the dole scheme

The federal government has announced a $139 million program to provide 65,000 places
under its work-for-the-dole scheme.

Employment Services Minister TONY ABBOTT says 119 organisations will be made conditional
offers of business under the Work For The Dole 2000 tender.

Mr ABBOTT says that under the program, community work co-ordinators in conjunction
with sponsor organisations will generate and develop work experience opportunities for
eligible job seekers.

Mr ABBOTT says the new arrangements will make it easier for community groups to get
involved in work for the dole.

He says this will help partnerships between local community organisations wanting to
sponsor work for the dole activities.

He says participants should also benefit from having a wider range of work experience
opportunities to choose from.
