FED: Eye specialists warn against viewing solar eclipse
Eye specialists have a blunt warning for anyone planning to directly view Wednesday'ssolar eclipse -- stop it, or you'll go blind.
A total eclipse -- the first over Australia since 1976 -- will be visible in the SouthAustralian outback towns of Ceduna and Lyndhurst on Wednesday evening.
The Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Ophthalmologists and the OptometristsAssociation of Australia say the message is simple -- there's no safe way of directlyviewing the eclipse.
The Association says people who look directly at the eclipse risk burning a hole intheir retina which will lead to permanent blindness.
President of the Optometrists Association, IAN BLUNTISH, has also warned against usingsunglasses or welder's masks.
He says there are no consumer devices which are specifically designed to observe the sun safely.
But thousands of people are expected to ignore the warnings, with high demand for eclipseviewing glasses.
